Turf Deli Spring Racing Carnival - Sandown Classic
Sandown Classic 2001 - Preview - Beach Weather 17/11/01

The last week of our spring carnival campaign and its onto the poor old Sandown Classic, once known as the Sandown Cup (but a Classic is much more Classic than a Cup). The Sandown Classic is the forgotten day at the end of the Spring Carnival. When all the fair weather, once a year, spring carnival party people have moved on, it is the real stayers who make the journey down Dandenong Road to the forgotten land. No, you cannot get there by boat, nor by helicopter, there will be no Neighbours stars dropping by for a chat, no-one talking about their latest project and there is definitely no Fashions on the Field. As a trade off for all these missing attractions you get to move around and bet in peace for the first time in months.

Once again the spring has been ruined by miserable weather, so as others have suggested - Is it time to move the Spring Carnival forward 3 or 4 weeks ?. Easter falls on a different weekend every year, so why not the Melbourne Cup ?. Cup week is just as big as Christmas for most punters, so why not combine the two events ?. Imagine a Cup Week with 30 degree weather, shorts and t-shirts all around, BBQs, sun tans, beach towels, some good surfing and and ice cream vans. Although getting sand in your jockey silks can be a real bugger.
