Turf Deli Racing News

Horse Of A Life Time

With so much focus on flashy international runners every Spring Carnival it is great this year to see some down to earth, home grown types chasing the big spring riches, such as RICH ENUFF in the Caulfield Guineas this weekend.

Home bred by his trainer, in the rolling green hills and lush trickling streams of outer suburban Cranbourne, RICH ENUFF has had three starts for three wins this spring, and they have all been super impressive.

Even more impressive he has started at odds of $16, $6 and $3.70.

If a horse like this was trained by a big name trainer, like a Mr P. Moody or Mrs G. Waterhouse, he would have gone around at less than even money his last two starts and would be an unbackable favourite today.

So you don't need all those corporate bookmaker specials to get better odds.

Just place the name Cranbourne next to your rising equine star and watch the odds double and triple.

The suburban snobs would add in a gag about that being the opposite of what happens to house prices when you put the name Cranbourne next to them, but they don't get to have a potential super star stallion lurking in their shopping malls.

Trainer and owner Ken Keys, has been great with his horses for a long time and we have often followed his distinctive purple and pink colours. Should he win there is a also a great opportunity for the Melbourne Racing Club to do a RICH ENUFF purple n pink Fairy Floss promotion. Just try not to get any on your good suit.

His trainer is chasing his first Group One race, and has described his horse as the "Horse Of A Lifetime".

Which is a fair description, because as a stallion if he wins, he will pay his way for several rather luxurious lifetimes in his breeding career.

Big overseas offers have been turned down. This is all about a feature Group One dream. This is a kicking the winning goal after the siren to win the Grand Final, becoming President of the United States, growing the largest pumpkin at the country fair , stuff dreams are made off type scenario. (ok, so maybe our dreams are a little different than most, but don't you go knocking the excitement of pumpkin glory)

If you head out to Caulfield make sure you go see RICH ENUFF in the mounting yard.

He prances, he dances, he is a bundle of energy and needs two handlers to hold him back like a prize boxer at a weigh in. And hopefully he will be part of a great racing story and glory.

Punting Check Up

With the intense punting weeks of spring about to kick off, time to check up and make sure you are getting the most out of your punting dollar.

There are always plenty of offers flying around and you can be clever and place bets with the different agencies to take advantage of them.

Sportsbet are offering:

Matching first bet up to $150
- New accounts only (ACT, QLD, TAS, NT only)

Top Tote Plus
- best price out of the three TABs and Starting Price so you are always going to get better odds.

Weekly money refunds
- this week money back if your horse runs 2nd or 3rd in Caulfield Guineas or Thousand Guineas.

Doubles and Multiples
- use the magical powers of multiplication to try and snare a big return for a small outlay for a bit of fun

Power Prices
- better odds between Saturday 11am and midday. We do much of our punting shopping in bulk through this offer.

Justice payouts
- they were nice enough to refund everyone who backed SUAVITO last week at Flemington

The weekly money refund specials are especially good, it means you can just back a horse straight out to win and go for glory, with an insurance return if it gets beaten and runs a place.

Punting Stand Still

The tips bombed out on Saturday at Flemington for the Turnbull Stakes. Though after a great start to the season we were well and truly due for a wipe out.

You know you are having a bad day on the punt when your Best Bet and one of your favourite horses SUAVITO simply refuses to even leave the starting gates.

Poor Greg Miles, the Flemington race caller, as if calling a horse race isn't hard enough, having the favourite suddenly disappear in a puff of smoke left him bewildered and confused.

Our feature race preview was still pretty spot on though, narrowing it down to two main winning chances including LUCIA VALENTIA 1st W=$8.90 and summing the race up nicely.

Sportsbet were nice enough to refund all win and each way bets on the Horse that Refused To Move, though most punters did their money in the coldest possible way.

We have heaped praise on SUAVITO on this page before, but think it might be time to call off the engagement?

We are still in the black overall so far the season, but we are coming to the business end of the spring when the punting form really matters.

2014 Spring Campaign: 9 weeks - 5 profits - 3 returns - 1 wipe outs. Net: +$150.65

FROM THE RACING ARCHIVES - SCHILLACI STAKES
_____________________________________________________________________

Every week this spring we will be delving into the climate controlled historical archives (also known as the garage) to pull out something that only exists in hard copy from the Racing Archives.

THIS WEEK: SCHILLACI

With the running of the Schillaci Stakes, one of the few races at Caulfield named after an actual racehorse (and not a racing administrator), let's look back to the wonderful sprinting grey's first start.

SCHILLACI kicked off his career in a maiden at Seymour on 22/10/1991 defeating MAVOURNAE. Interestingly, MAVOURNAE won the Rubiton Stakes in 1992, before SCHILLACI, who won that race in 1993 and 1995.

Now that is one strong maiden field.

SCHILLACI went on to win the Lighting Stakes, Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket Handicap in 1992, completing the triple sprint crown and winning three Group One races in his first six starts.

Obviously, no-one had tipped off the staff at the old The Sporting Globe about how good he was, as no-one even tipped him to win his maiden!

MISSING HORSE

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS HORSE?

SUAVITO - Bay Mare, 4 years of age.

Last seen entering the starting gates at the Flemington 1400M on Turnbull Stakes Day.

Much loved by punters, until Saturday

If found, please contact Greg Miles, Flemington race caller, or all those punters who backed her.

CAULFIELD TRACK GUIDE
______________________________________

If you are heading out to Caulfield this week check out our Caulfield Track Guide .

Handy hints with associated nonsense about where to meet, where to hang out and how to avoid the queues on course.

THOUSAND GUINEAS
- don't get confused, the Thousand Guineas is now on the same day as the Caulfield Guineas, and the mid week meeting now features the Blue Sapphire Stakes sprint race. The mid week meeting is still a great way to enjoy Spring Carnival racing without the mad crowds.

FOOD
No more chips and dim sims during feature meetings, head down to Eat Street for some real tasty food, in front of the Black Caviar Pavilion

TOILETS
- the once a year attendees queue for the portables, or crowd into the ground floor facilities of the main grandstand. Those with some inside knowledge walk out the back of the course and towards the stables, opposite the old betting ring where the old, red brick large toilet block is clean, sturdy, and has no frustrating lines - even for the girls.

ENTERTAINMENT
Whilst the AFL roll out Tom Jones and MeatLoaf, again and again and again, Caulfield is hip to the sounds of the new generation. Though we aren't in the slightest. Who the heck are The Script? You can check them out regardless.

Check out what's on at Caulfield on Saturday.
