Turf Deli Racing News

I Can't Believe It's Not Sandown

The miserable cold weather in Melbourne the last week can only mean we have reached the end of spring and that ummm, summer ? is right around the corner.

And of course, as is tradition, we end our yearly Turf Deli Spring Campaign with the Sandown Classic.

Run at Caulfield.

Also known as "I Can't Believe It's Not Sandown"

So, very, very confused.

Poor ol' Sandown.

We used to joke that Sandown gets ripped off only getting to turn up to the spring carnival party when everyone is already packing up the chairs.

Well this year it is even worse.

Most tracks would schedule repair works to avoid their major meetings. But not at poor ol' Sandown. Being nothing more than a midweek work horse for Victorian racing Sandown is out of action on the only day of the year it gets even remotely close to the spotlight.

If you do end up at Sandown and wonder why it is so easy to get a car park this year then you have hopelessly failed this comprehension test. But if you see ZIPPING hitch hiking, give him a lift, not sure he got the memo either.

The Sandown Classic is at CAULFIELD. Got it?

If you are really missing your once a year pilgrimage down Dandenong Road to Springvale you can check out our Sandown Track Guide for fond memories.

End Of Spring Campaign

This officially marks the end of the Turf Deli Spring Campaign 2013.

Having a look back over the highlights of the season, in slow motion with accompanying soaring highs and lows music:

- the tips went to town on Rupert Clarke Stakes day, finding 4 winners on top, and 6 winners in the selections from 8 races, including a few at double figure odds. Likewise, Caulfield Guineas and Caulfield Cup day also landed a swag of winners.

- the Betting Portfolio managed to get a return most weeks, but just couldn't push a profit. It was the Best Roughies that showed up, especially later in the spring with KOONOOMOO running 2nd at W=$30.10 on Caulfield Cup day, and REMEMBA HOWE kicking off Melbourne Cup Day with a bang as top pick and best roughie running 3rd at W=$45.60. Whilst Facebook punters got a boost on Geelong Cup Day when best roughie NADHIMA ran 3rd at W=$53.40

- Cup Week was just plain bizarre. There weren't that many winners around, but when we did find them they were at good odds and we usually nailed a value exotic as well. Including a $621 box trifecta on Derby Day , a $210 box quinella on Melbourne Cup Day and even more strangely a $892 straight trifecta on Oaks Day and rounding the week off with a $487 straight trifecta on Stakes Day. Whoa !

- and we had great fun pointing out what great value odds PUISSANCE DE LUNE was for the Cup early in the Spring. Where did he finish again? What? He didn't even start? No way - he was good thing?

We obviously have an awful lot of fun running the website regardless, so thank you for joining our spring journey.

Particular thanks goes to the Facebook regulars who throw their two cents worth of comments and likes in every week, and help us out with information and stories.

Thanks also to everyone out there who has passed on this email to friends or sent us encouraging words. Much appreciated.

We always welcome feedback about the crappy gags, tips and website, or debate about the form and we especially love hearing from people when they have had a collect.

You can contact us at info@turfdeli.com.au or post a comment on our Facebook page

We will be back next year, kicking off in August 2014 as per usual.

In the meantime, we will keep posting tips and updates on Facebook and Twitter when we spot something that it is worth having a fling at. Note that you can view this link even if you do not have an account.

Last Week's Results

Nice Way To Start The Day

Stakes Day was just plain stupidly cold, so you were best to be on the couch at home, and following our tips, especially in the first few races.

We continued our quite bizarre exotic Cup week journey, not only finding a double figure winner on top in Race 2, but for the second meeting in a row tipping a juicy trifecta straight out that paid $487. Then the winner of the next race was the Best Each Way of the Day. Fair enough there wasn't much to report for the rest of the day, but you can hardly complain with a start like that.

Race 2: 9-POST D'FRANCE, 11-XAVI, 3-SYSMO

1st 9-POST D'FRANCE W=$11.10

Quinella: (9-11) $47.50

Straight Trifecta: (9-11-3) $487.10

Race 3: 6-BEL THOR 1st W=$3.40

The Betting Portfolio got most of its money back, but again couldn't nudge a profit. With one week to go we need a major exotic miracle to pull this spring out of the reject bin

2013 Spring Campaign: 16 weeks - 2 profits - 11 returns - 3 wipe outs - Net: -$533.15

View last week's Stakes Day 2013 results.

Our Betting Portoflio is in trouble, but we are showing nice season profits on trifectas and quinellas on the selections in the Bottom Line.

ADOPT A JOCKEY
___________________________________________

Come Spring time these cute little cuddly fellas are always so popular.

Everyone wants one or wants to look like one at the fancy dress Melbourne Cup BBQ.

Remember a jockey is not just for Spring Carnival.

At the end of every Cup Week unloved jockeys are often just left abandoned on the steps of the local TAB.

So think about adopting a jockey. They are available in a wide range of silks / colour schemes so they can make a great garden feature.

SPRING CARNIVAL SNAPSHOT

#3 - A HORSE WALKS INTO A BAR

Whilst some racehorses strive to race into Equine Immortality, others are quite content to just have an on-course bar named after them.

#5 - THE TRACK WALKER

If you cast your eye out onto the course in between races, you might just catch sight of the professionalism of some jockeys.

Carefully walking the track. Pounding the ground. Watching for wear and tear. Looking for the best going to ensure they give their mounts the very best chance in the next race.

Either that - or they lost their bloody car keys during the running of the previous.

MY KINGDOM FOR A HORSE

- You may own a large jewel encrusted crown

- You may have your own horse drawn carriage and troupe to escort you

- You may own a really big palace centrally located close to transport and shops

but nothing, nothing beats the feeling of owning a winning racehorse.
