Major Race Days

Stakes Day

Ending off the week with Stakes Day and the dress code is more casual than the other days. Nice casual and smart race wear for a wind down end to the week.

Stakes Day used to be hidden away at the end of Cup Week, a chance for the regular punters to crawl out of their dark caves that they have been hiding in all spring, cursing the crap free to air racing coverage, and return to the course after the craziness of spring and still see some quality racing.

However, Stakes Day has gone totally ballistic over the last ten years, with crowds increasing from around 30,000 to the 80,000 to 100,000 mark.

Marketed as kids day, it is a chance for the whole family to head out to Flemington.

The best thing about Stakes Day ? It is the only racing day of the year where you can buy fairy floss on course.

Last Week's Results

Sarah Jessica Day

Oaks Day was all about Sarah Jessica Parker, Joan Collins, Shane Warne and Elizabeth Hurley and somewhere in between MOSHEEN managed to find time to lead all the way and slaughter the Oaks field by nine lengths.

The situation with the TV broadcast contract reached a new height of absurdity with the last race. TVN and Sky Channel are banned from showing the Cup week races under the contract, but when they jumped in the last Channel 7 were showing Deal Or No Deal and no horses leapt out of the boxes to say "Surprise Trifecta" - so the last race was not telecast live outside of on course and pubs and clubs.

The Turf Deli tips floundered yet again, but we did get hit very hard by scratchings, which also took out a large portion of the Betting Portfolio.

The only good news is that we got left with a nice value top pick we were keen on in Race 7 : 17-ROCKING FORCE who got us out for the day at W=$15.50 .

The Betting Portfolio doubled up and had a wipe out, with a fair few bets scratched, our best bet only narrowly missing, and we were unlucky not to score the Race 7 quinella in the Betting Portfolio with 1st, 3rd and 4th around the value winner.

2011 Spring Campaign : 16 weeks - 5 profits - 8 returns - 3 wipe outs - Net : $-67

HAVE A PING THIS SPRING
_________________________________________
Betfair First Bet Free

BETFAIR's current offer is a refund up to $100 on your first bet if it loses.

Great if you are a small bettor and always dreamed of having a ping at one at odds in a feature race over the spring.

You can sign up, have a ping, and if it wins - collect big, if not, back to the drawing board and just bet as normal. After the first bet, you can place your normal TAB bets through BETFAIR as well as they link in with the Tasmanian TAB.

Always read the Terms and Conditions on these offers - to make sure you make the most of them. Note that the offer is not valid for VIC and SA residents. The bet has to be a single bet of up to $100, so you can't split it across a horse at different odds. Our recommendation would be to use the BETFAIR Starting Price option.

Every week over spring we are going to pick out a horse at better than $10 to have a $100 no risk ping on.
