Turf Deli Horse Of The Week
Sunline - Manikato Stakes 19/08/00

A lot has been written about Sunline, and we here at Turf Deli are usually the first to knock a tall poppy horse, but she is just a freak. There are a few performances every now and then that simply take your breath away, and watching Sunline in the Manikato Stakes on Saturday was one of them.

We did not invest a single cent on the race and were watching just for the spectacle and Sunline certainly did make a spectacle of herself. Three wide, first up, at an unsuitable trip, but she was sitting pretty from the 600 metres and you could tell that something magic was about to happen, as she sped away and won with four hoofs up in the air, looking backwards and poking her tongue out at the rest of a fairly decent sprint field.

If you look back at her form, it is even more amazing.

Twenty five runs now for eighteen wins and four placings.

Those seven times she was beaten include

- a seventh in Hong Kong at the end of last spring when she was over the top anyway,

- a second in the 2000 Doncaster (beaten only a neck) after being continually pressured in the lead and carrying 57.5 kgs,

- and a 2nd at Caulfield at her first run in Australia when stepping up from 1200M to 1600M and being badly hampered at the top of the straight.

Even better, she continues to race on , even though she could have been retired to stud a long time ago. It's good to see an owner and trainer that are ready to accept the challenges and not put their horse to an early cotton wool stud lifestyle.

OK. Yes, I am drooling…Time for a cold shower.
